ABOUT
History of TACMRS
(Taiwan Association of Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies)
The founding of this Association not only provides academics in Taiwan an intercollegiate and interdisciplinary platform to promote domestic humanities research, it also signifies the start up of a community that involves western classical, medieval and early modern studies in Asia. For the dissemination of scholarship and as the breeding ground of Taiwan’s fledging academics, TACMRS is set to serve its scholarly functions. Duly inaugurated in 2007, Prof. Nicholas Koss served as the first president of the Association. Thereby during the initial five years of TACMRS, Fu Jen University and Sun Yat-sen University alternated to host the TACMRS conference, adding visibility of the wide field to the Taiwan academia. The Association also made it a policy to actively engage in international exposure by sending delegates to attend overseas conferences.
Even before the founding of the Association, we established links in 2006 with the Medieval and Early Modern English Studies Association of Korea (MEMESAK). Such a link continues until this day and both associations concur to send delegate to participate in either side’s conferences on a regular basis. Then in 2008, we allied ourselves with the International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University, by organizing sponsored sessions in the Kalamazoo congress. By 2009, we extended ourselves to link up with the Renaissance Studies of America (RSA) with sponsored session at its conferences. Further in 2010, we lined up with Cooperative for the Advancement of Research through a Medieval European Network (CARMEN) as probably the only Asian member to this European setup. Recently still, we began to participate at the University of Leeds medieval conference in the U.K. in an institutional fashion. As can be seen, after the founding of the Association, we have every intention to reach out to strengthen our studies, vision and exchanges with the far-off medieval Europe. Lately, we explore the vista of developing East-West relationships during the three periods concerned of our Association. Much remains to be developed.

The Department of Art History
The Department of Art History places art history at its core, with the integration of art history, conservation and maintenance of cultural relics and museum practice as teaching strategies and general guideline. The objective is to nurture talents with training in art history, as well as fundamental knowledge in archaeology, conservation and maintenance of cultural relics, and museum collection management and exhibition. Since its establishment in
2003, this objective has served as the guideline for hiring of faculty members and designing courses
In 2010, in order to further enhance the quality of the faculty and to implement the principle of sharing educational resources, the department merged with the Graduate Institute of Art History and Art Criticism, which was established in 1996, becoming a department which offers both Bachelor’s degree program (Department of Art History) and Master’s degree program (Art History and Art Criticism Master’s program).
The Master’s program is designed upon the undergraduate program provided by the Department of Art History. It extends studies into the professional field of art history and art criticism. In addition to researching East Asian cultural relics (including Chinese and East Asian cultural relics, artworks, paintings and books, and Buddhist art) and learning to interpret modern and contemporary art (including East Asian modern art, contemporary art, and criticism), students also further their understanding of Western classic art and early modern art (Western art history).
The Master’s program centers on the learning of theories as well as training and implementation of all practical aspects. Our mission is to nurture art history researchers with an understanding of diversified cultures and professional art critics with a solid grasp of art history.
Our department is the only art history related academic institutions in Taiwan that is based upon the integrated structure of its undergraduate program and graduate coursework. Focusing on analysis, evaluation and interpretation of artworks, the Department of Art History combines the learning of art theories with applying theories to practice as its direction of professional development.

本系成立於民國92年，係以藝術史學為專業主體，並兼重文物修復與博物館學之基礎訓練，以培養兼具藝術史學、文物保存維護以及博物館蒐藏管理與展示能力之基礎人才為目標。為全國唯一以藝術作品之分析、品鑑與詮釋為核心，以整合藝術史學與博物館實務的一貫性系統訓練為發展方向之專業科系。為彰顯藝術史學之專業特性及其與文博實務之密切聯繫，本系無論在師資聘任、學生培育、課程設計與設施配置等面向，均朝向整合藝術史學、文物保存維護以及博物館實務三位一體之教學與發展目標進行規劃。
發展目標與教學方向：
1. 涵納東、西方的藝術史教學
藝術史研究範圍廣袤，本系課程內容採台灣本地藝術文物、中國、東亞以及歐美藝術兼重原則。其中有關傳統宗教禮儀藝術與涉及各方文化交流課題，為本系教學研究之發展重點。
2.結合藝術史、文物修護及博物館學理論與實踐的教學內容
（1）培養藝術文物的分析、品鑑與詮釋能力
（2）重視藝術技法的觀摩與體驗
（3）充實田野調查與考古學基礎訓練
（4）強調文物保存基礎知識與修護技能
（5）培養文物典藏與展示實務能力
3.整合多學科及方法的專業訓練
藝術史分析與作品詮釋，旨在使作品獲得正確的理解與歷史定位，除需熟悉風格分析與圖像研究方法外，加強對相關學科理論的認識將有益於思考面向的開拓。故除系訂專業課程外，本系亦鼓勵學生修習其他人文、社會與及自然科學等課程，重視英、日、法、德等外國語文基礎閱讀能力的養成。
碩士班
本碩士班的前身為成立於民國85年的藝術史與藝術評論研究所。除培養研究生獨立思考與研究能力外，同時強化人文素養，經由對藝術作品實際的觀察及研究，結合文獻的探討，對藝術史與藝術評論的各種研究方法做深入理解，從而培養具備多元文化理解之藝術史人才及具有藝術史觀之藝術評論人才。歷經14年時間，配合藝術史學系的成立，為落實教學資源共享原則，於99年與藝術史學系合併為藝術史學系碩士班，畢業後授予文學碩士學位〈Master of Arts〉。
發展目標與教學方向：
課程主要以藝術史學為核心，著重於深耕東亞古代文物之研究、強化近現代與當代藝術之詮釋能力外，並發展西洋藝術史專業，專長方向主要區分為「中國及東亞文物」、「書畫與佛教藝術」、「東亞近現代藝術」、「西洋藝術史」以及「當代藝術與評論」等五大領域。各有二位師資可相互支援，以朝向擴大學生的基礎知識面學習，同時奠定獨立的研究能力為目標。
1. 提昇藝術史與評論專題探索能力
碩士班專業課程是以延續大學階段的基礎訓練為基礎，朝向兼具廣度與深度的專題研究方向進行設計。對於大學階段非屬相關科系學生，則藉由藝術史先修課程的修習，增進其作品分析與檢視研究的基本能力。
2. 建立東亞多元文化藝術交流研究基地
碩士班教學方向著重深化東亞古代文物研究，重視近現代與當代藝術及台灣美術，結合西洋藝術史專業，延聘師資分別畢業自臺、日、歐、美等學有專精之藝術史或藝術評論專業人才。由於教師訓練背景及專業領域各有所長，於教學領域及研究範圍和對象亦各有分工，對於與不同文化藝術交流相關之學術議題皆有所涉及，因此正可拓展學生的學術視野與思考面向，使本系成為多元文化藝術交流研究的重要基地。
3. 強化跨領域學術交流與實務參與
本系碩士班課程除聚焦於藝術作品的分析詮釋，亦重視藝術史的應用與實踐，因此積極與臺灣、大陸、日本和歐美地區之公私立博物館、文物考古單位、藝術家與收藏家進行交流，除延請海內外專家來系講學外，並鼓勵教師進行境外移地教學，或由學生透過田野調查和專業實習之機會，走出教室，實際面對研究對象或參與相關實務工作。

Sean Roberts is a specialist in the arts of Renaissance Europe. His research is concerned with the interactions between Italy and the Islamic lands and with the place of prints in the histories of art and technology. Sean is the author of Printing a Mediterranean World: Florence, Constantinople and the Renaissance of Geography (Harvard University Press, 2013) and is the co-editor with Tim McCall and Giancarlo Fiorenza of Visual Cultures of Secrecy in Early Modern Europe (Truman State University Press, 2013). He has been awarded major fellowships from Harvard's Villa I Tatti, the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and the Huntington Library. His essays on cartography, diplomacy, and printmaking have appeared in journals including Imago Mundi, Print Quarterly, Renaissance Studies, the Journal of Early Modern History, and Intellectual History Review. He is currently writing an examination of skullduggery and malfeasance among the earliest engravers titled Sabotage! Rivalry, Technology, and the Making of Renaissance Prints.

Ad Putter is Professor of Medieval English Literature at the University of Bristol. His publications include Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and French Arthurian Romance (1995), An Introduction to the Gawain Poet (1996), and Studies in the Metre of Alliterative Verse (co-author, 2007). He has a special interest in the French influence on English language and literature. Drive Yourself: Visitors who drive to our campus will have to enter from the West Gate. By providing proofs of identity (ID card etc.) to security guard, visitors are able to enter with a temporary parking permit. Please refer to the map showed below for direction and parking route.

Taxi: For visitors who take taxi to our campus, please also enter from West Gate. By letting the security guard know you're coming for the conference, the taxi is allowed to drive in and park at the spot showed in the map below. It will only take visitors 2 minutes to walk from the taxi parking spot to the auditorium.
